Human-resource professionals at organizations of all sizes must quickly enact policies for recreational marijuana use if they haven’t already.
While large companies with HR departments and legal teams had the firepower to get their pot policies in place when legislation took effect Oct. 17, many smaller businesses are still trying to catch up.
Different employers within the same sector can learn from each other, but may not necessarily be able to take a cookie-cutter approach.
Police services are dealing with recreational marijuana use by their officers differently. The Toronto Police Service will prohibit officers from using recreational marijuana within 28 days of reporting for duty, while several other services say their officers can use pot recreationally as long as they are “fit for duty” when they are on shift.
